With the wild cards added, and the top 12 expanded to top 13, Idol Season 8 had selected its finalists for 2009. Now it was time for the real shows to begin and the fans of the real singers to enjoy the performances and start picking a favorite. The theme for top 13 night was Michael Jackson night, and as Paula put it, no one knows Michael Jackson songs better than Kris Allen, who had already performed Man in the Mirror for his group night semi-final selection. More behind the jump...
Performance Night, Top 13
For this night, Kris went with Remember the Time and it's been the only time he's ever performed it. It was a fun, upbeat performance, admittedly with a few vocal miscues, but there was no doubting that Kris was able to get the audience going. I remember watching this when it first aired: I was cleaning my kitchen and to be honest, the performances before Kris weren't all that exciting. Kris was the first one who made me look up to see who that was.
I've got the video below. You'll also see a good interview with Kris and his family. This is where we all learned Kris was married. During the performance, you'll see a lot of kicky feet action. And during the judges' segment, you'll hear the audience go wild and the judges giving a ton of positive feedback. Kara says "The girls love Kris" and praises him for helping the other contestants with Michael Jackson. Paula says he's engaging and adorable/sexy. Simon observes that the song doesn't really fit the guitar and he "wouldn't have brought the wife out so early" which gets a funny face from Katy. And Randy cuts off Simon and praises the guitar, saying it's "very Jason Mraz-y." It's good stuff; check it out!

Before we get to the results, let's check out this cool top 13 photoshoot! (Thanks to @krisjonin)
And this fun party video!
Results Show, Top 13
For the results show, of course with top 13, you aren't sure what to expect. You knew some pre-show favorites would be safe. And you knew you'd get an awesome group number featuring some Kradam dance moves and a Gokey hip thrust (watch out for the 1:30 mark). Be sure to check out the 1:50 mark too to see a spoiler shot of the top 4.
But new to this season, this episode introduces the judge's save. And we get a tour of the judge's mansion:
We also get to see the weekly Ford video!
I found this cool behind the scenes video where Kris talks about making a "stank face" in it.
Getting back to the results episode, Kris is told he's safe at the 15:50 mark, although Seacrest fakes him out and he starts walking to him, thinking he's not safe. (It's Megan Joy who made bottom 3 and Jasmine Murray who gets sent home at this point.) Next up, we get Kanye West singing Heartless. He'll be topped in the Top 3 episode. ;)
Following that, it's time for the rest of the results! The rest are told they are safe, except for Anoop Desai (who had a rough performance) and Jorge Nunez. They have to wait though, because at the 32 minute mark, we get a fun performance from Kelly Clarkson singing My Life Would Suck Without You. After that, we learn that Anoop is safe, and Jorge is sent home.
